Funtastic Weekend at the Lake

We left Kansas City, ASAP after work on Friday. It makes a huge difference if you can get ahead of the traffic. We had a group of 6 and instead of taking 2 cars that seat 5 we decided to squeeze all 6 of us in Heath’s Vue that has 5 seats. This was rough with 2 coolers, all our bags and drinks and food for the weekend but we made the best of it and Jon got the hard seat most of the time.

Friday night we scarfed down dinner early and quickly. We had burgers and fried potatoes and corn on the cob. The tomatoes and corn was from a farmers market I hit up.

It was cloudy but we got on the boat and cruised around and found places for limbs to hang some hooks, stick some chicken liver on them and wait for catfish to come.

And sure enough the next morning we had a couple of catfish.

Peanut, Jon and I were die hard fisherman and always excited to check and rebait the lines but the excitement wore off everyone else once the chicken livers began to ferment and really stick up the boat.

Off the end of Stook’s dock is a nice shallow sandy bottom. So I could stand in the water and play with Peanut

and Heath.

Once I caught a fish this big.

But it was a yucky old carp so I took a few pictures then tossed him back.

However it was probably the biggest fish Peanut has helped catch so I had him pet him and help toss him back. There was a ton of Asian carp out this weekend and they were jumping all around our boat.

Peanut was even excited about cleaning the 3 good sized catfish (2-3lbs) we caught and very curious about all the squishy things that came out.

It was hot and sunny on Sunday and we spent all playing in the water. Peanut loved jumping off the dock and jumping off me.

We cleaned up the boat then decided to use it for soemthing besides fishing and got out the tube.

1st Peanut and I

Then H and Peanut

Even Stooks and Peanut had a go. Notice Peanut liked it so much he was ready to ride with everyone on their turn.

We all had a great weekend and so much fun. We ate a ton of great stuff and finished off the weekend with a catfish fry. We had 6 large fillets so breaded and fried them then tossed them on a toasted bun w/ cheese and put scoops of coleslaw right on sandwich. It was really good.

And we brought home a new friend for Jumpy.

One of our lines caught a flathead catfish that was too small to clean so we kept him, named him Phil and brought him home. Flathead’s are suposadly pretty agressive and I hope will be an exciting addition to our tank. It is likely Phill and Jumpy will have a disagreement that will end in a fight and I’m not sure who I am rooting for yet. Ideally we will keep enough feeder goldfish in the tank that the two big boys are too busy eating them to care about eachother for a while.
