Day 9: Yack Burger

Our plans for the camp out were pretty up in the air so I went on a run early and figured out some logistics in my head. Once home I checked on some drive times and distances and then went to the grocery store and got the last of the supplies we needed. When I got back everyone was up and I helped get them fed. We cleaned ourselves and the house up some and then hopped in the truck.

We were excited to see the USA play Belgium in the world cup and headed to a giant log cabin sports bar, right on a big creek. Hundreds of other people were also excited and had the same idea and there were no seats. So we drove over to another giant place and found the same problem there. We started heading out of town and found another taproom like the one Heath and I got a drink in and tried it. They had a booth with great screen views left and we took it and got our order in during half time.

We had worked up an appetite looking for a place to eat and the food was all really good. The game was tied forever and the whole place was on the edges of their seats. We lost in overtime but still had a lot of fun.

Then we got back on the highway and headed out of town. We tried to make the kids nap and/or look for moose but they didn’t really do a good job of either. I typed on my blog and Heath spotted the moose and her 2 calfs for us.

It rained and made us nervous about camping so we called ahead and found the place we were going had no cabins left. We called a few other places in Copper Center AK but didn’t find a place. I found a place that didn’t take calls on the phone and we went there it was called Uncle Nicolai’s Inn.  We stopped there and they had a cabin. It was small and had a double and a twin bed, a tv and a coffee pot. There was just enough room on the floor for a pack and play and a sleeping bag so we took it.

The mosquitoes were thick. We used the bathroom located in the next building and then got back in the car and went out to check out the “town”. There were a couple different roads w/ a few campsites, fishing charter places and cabins. We did find the restaurant and decided to eat there instead of getting the camp stove going and cooking outside our cabin.

I was really glad we did because it was a fun experience, being the only restaurant there was a steady flow of locals. When the waitress handed out the menus she told us they were out of chicken, halibut and onion rings. It was a small menu and that limited us even more but they had a yack meat burger and a reindeer sausage meatball hoagie. I did the yack and Heath did the reindeer. Peanut did a pepperoni lasagna and Pumpkin got a grilled cheese. We tried to get PBJ sandwiches first but they were also out of peanut butter.

The food they did have was great and the bread and noodles were all home made. The yack was really good, way better then bison.

After dinner we drove back over to the cabin. We brought in our stuff and put on our pajamas. We had eaten way too much and just laid on the beds and watched tv. There was actually quite a few channels and we watched a nature show on Yellowstone.

It took a long time to get the kids quieted down and asleep. They were excited and the room did not get very dark even though it was raining out.
