(spot the bald eagle)
It continued to rain all night and was still raining when I got up. Heath got up when I did and we decided to run together. We had to hurry and ran quick and got back just in time for the USA vs Germany World Cup Game at 8am.
Pops had bacon, sausage, eggs, fruit and coffee ready and we ate and watched the game. The kids all got up and ate and watched with us. During ½ time we took showers and got some laundry going.
Right after the game we packed a few things and then hit the road for a trip to Homer.
In perfect conditions the drive to Homer is about 4 hours, on a rainy day, with construction and car full of kids with tiny bladders it takes a little more than 6 hours. We did stop along the way for drinks, bathrooms, a mini hike and a great lunch at Suzzie’s and the trip was pretty fun with amazing views.
When we got into Homer we headed right for the tip of the spit. I’m typing this with no google but my definition of a spit is a super long, skinny peninsula. Homer is the home to the longest spit in the world. Our hotel was in the best place possible, right at the tip of the spit.
We checked into our rooms and dropped off some stuff and then rushed off to the Homer brewery for a flight and some pints.
There was a nice little deck room off from the brewery that we drank in. Heath got the kids a crepe at a nearby stand and we had a good time.
The kids were pretty restless from the car ride and rain so we took them over to a park to burn off some energy.
The park was incredible, there was a ton of stuff mostly made out of wood for the kids and us to do. We slid, swung, climbed, bounced, hung and worked up a good appetite.
Another cool part was we could see the spit from the playground.
After the playground we were pretty hungry and decided we should eat fresh halibut caught off the spit. We found a place and got some food and drinks and it was really good.
After dinner we walked around some shops a bit, checked out the rocks and stuff along the shore and got kicked out of a bar.
We went into the Salty Dog, a bar famous from Deadliest Catch and after making our way past the “salty dogs” at the bar and to a nice table in the back we were asked to leave as no kids are allowed in after 8.
We went to the hotel bar instead and ordered a bunch of desserts with our beers. As we were eating a bald eagle landed on some driftwood right outside the window.
We finished eating and went outside to watch fishermen pulling in halibut and cod right and left. The eagle came back and landed on the roof right over us and watched the kids play in the rocks and shells with us.
We ended up staying and watching the eagle and fishermen for a long time and let the kids play late. It got way past bedtime but was still light out so hard to make them come to bed.
Eventually we pulled them off to bed. Once they were down we set up skpe between the rooms and then had another beer in Pop’s room. As we were looking outside we saw an eagle swoop down and grab a fish and fly off.
After our beers we called it a night and went to bed.
